Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency was created by Sarkeesian. The website hosts videos with commentary that analyze the depictions of women in contemporary culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in narratives from popular culture. Aiming to dispel the myths that are associated with women in pop media, she is also working to address issues relating to harassing women targeted by the media and different classes of individuals online. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. In addition to being a popular public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and women's rights at an early stage. The ambitious lady planned to launch an internet series that examined gender representation in games, and was then the victim of a harassment campaign online. This attack didn't stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as an activist for women in media. She is a recipient of several awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. This educational non-profit explores the role of women in the pop-culture narratives.
