
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18 1999) is an American actress and a singer. Her career spans more than 40 years. London, a torch singer well-known for her smooth, melodic vocals and smooth contralto voice was a recording artist on more than thirty albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955-1969. Her performance of "Cry Me a River", a track she introduced on her debut album, was accepted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Alongside her musical notice, London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her performance as nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's career in acting lasted 35 years. It began around 1944 with roles in films. The films featured roles for the lead female role in several westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) as well as Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording agreement with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the start of her professional music career. Her last studio album was released in 1969. Her success continued as the female character of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) during which she was co-starring with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband who produced the show.
